......New York

Empire Plaza in Albany

Born in a suburb of Detroit, I moved from a large metropolitan city to smaller and smaller communities until now I live in the countryside of Central New York. Here are a few images from across the upstate region.

"By the time we got to Woodstock..." it had been transformed from a sleepy little town in the country to a combination of a moment of the past frozen in time and trendy upscale galleries, shops and restaurants. An interesting mix of fine artistry and living anachronism - hand blown glass to head shops.

Colorful and ornate, situated on a hilltop overlooking the countryside that surrounds Woodstock is this beautiful and exquisite Buddhist Monastery.

Near the eastern shore of Lake Ontario is the city of Watertown. Every day through the summer you can take a wild ride down the Black River through rapids and eddies; whitewater around every bend, the raft bounces and turns as the waves tug and toss you. Powered by a controlled release of water from an upstream dam, the rapids range from class II to IV in difficulty. For the really daring, try a spring run down the Moose or Hudson when the snow melt creates raging rivers for a few weeks. You'll wear a full wet suit, but bring thermal underwear, gloves, extra socks...and though you'll shiver from the enervating cold be prepared for the ride of your life.

In the town of Sterling near Fairhaven, along the southern shore of Lake Ontario you'll find a New York version of Brigadoon. It exists for only 10 or so weeks each summer and then fades away until the next year.
Similar in nature to other Renaissance Faires and SCA events, the setting for this recreation of an English village is a permanent collection of buildings, theaters, and kiosks spread out along a gently sloping hillside.

The day is filled with scores of performances and events....

...including a public dunking.

A trip to upstate New York would not be complete without a visit to Niagara Falls. Home of one of the first power generating stations thanks to the genius of Thomas Edison, Nicola Tesla and the resources of the Westinghouse Company, the best view of the falls is located.... in Canada. Walk through the rose gardens and along the canyon rim or take the elevator up the observation tower and enjoy a meal as the restaurant slowly turns, giving you a spectacular view of the area.

Closer to home, Taughannock Falls near Trumansburg is one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, and you can see it from this outlook or walk along the gorge trail to the base of the falls.
