Verify List

Updated: 4/26/21

In keeping this page, I frequently receive tips of one kind or another from a variety of sources that other stations not currently listed on the County Pages are still standing. Newspapers, magazines, books, newsletters, pamphlets--all are valuable for the hints and suggestions that they give, as are the reports of friends, field operatives, and Internet surfers. Occasionally specific details are supplied, but more often the report is on the order of "I heard from someone that Smalltown Station was moved years ago to Bigville." Anyone with information on any of the stations below is asked to e-mail me. In particular, I am interested in knowing the current and, if moved, the original location (town, address) of the station; what type it is (passenger, freight, combination); its current use (municipal, railroad, business, private, vacant); whether tracks are still there and what railroad, if any, is currently operating; and any other interesting notes or features.

                                               Notes/Replies/Resolutions:

"Mystery Station" #2

???

Pass.

Does anyone recognize this structure alilcam.gif (72 bytes) as having been a station somewhere in New Hampshire?  Answer: The station in question alilcam.gif (72 bytes)alilcam.gif (72 bytes)  is the Lee passenger station (sometimes known as South Lee) in Strafford Co., according to Don Wendell (Thanks, Don!). But Chris McLeer argues that it is Kittery Pt., Maine, and sends a photo that much resembles Mystery Station #2 (the arrow identifies the very similar end window).  Anyone else recognize it? (Thanks, Chris!)

"Mystery Station"

Cheshire

Pass.

Does anyone recognize this structure said to be near Mt. Monadnock?  Could it be Peterboro?  East Jaffrey?   Answer: The structure appears to be the station at Troy; Chris McLeer sends along an image that might well have been taken the same day--note the carriage before the station door in both.  (Thanks, Chris!)

Fabyans

Coos

Pass.

Is this the Fabyans original depot thought to be still standing across the tracks and up the hill?  This structure is the original Fabyans House station; the structure pictured in the original query appears to have been the 2nd station at Fabyans; whether it is still standing up on the hill is unknown.

Pierce's Bridge/ Bethlehem Jct.

Grafton

Pass.

Does anyone know if this structure which is plainly marked as Pierce's Bridge was a replacement station for the original Pierce's Bridge/Bethlehem Jct. depot () torn down in 1935? The adjacent autos seem to suggest a late 1950's/early 1960's date.  Resolution: The Pierce's Bridge station pictured here  stood in Lexington, MA, not in NH at all--which explains the confusion.

Parker

Hillsborough

Pass.

Is this station still standing in some form (possibly on Pleasant St. Ext.) alilcam.gif (72 bytes) or was it dismantled permanently in 1918? Answer: The station is still standing as part of a private residence.

Peterboro

Hillsborough

Frt.

Restaurant in town (on Depot St.)?  Answer: Randy Leclair confirms that the Twelve Pine restaurant on School St. at Depot Square is the old freighthouse, much modified.  Here is an overhead view of the original: .  (Thanks, Randy!)

Gerrish

Merrimack

Pass.

Has the station at Gerrish alilcam.gif (72 bytes) been torn down?  Answer: No!  As of November 2006, it is still standing in its original location.

Exeter

Rockingham

Pass.

Can someone explain the discrepancy between the report that 27 Arbor St alilcam.gif (72 bytes) is the original Exeter depot and this obviously different structure?  Was the latter a trolley station? Resolution: 27 Arbor St. was the original depot; the other structure appears to have served as a trolley station in the town square.
