CheckFiles is a useful shareware utility from Stochastic Systems that can help you keep track of what is going on with the files on your computer system. Using a checksum of each of your files, it can let you know what files have been added, deleted, corrupted, or modified since you last checked. Once you register, you can also use the more secure CRC-32 checking method in addition to the standard checksum.
Have you ever gone to use an old file that you haven't looked at in months, only to find that it either isn't there or has been corrupted? When you look on your backups, you can't find a good copy either! If you overwrite your backup tapes or disks every time you backup (or every few times), you should really check to make sure that you aren't erasing your last copy of a file you will need next month.
CheckFiles scans through your entire hard drive(s) (or only the paths you specify) and records the name, date, time, size, and checksum of every file in the directory. The next time you run CheckFiles, it compares this information with the actual status of each directory. It will tell you what files have been added, what files have changed, what files have been deleted, and what files have been corrupted. If you run CheckFiles before every backup, it will catch corrupt or deleted files that you need BEFORE you overwrite your backup. You can also run CheckFiles before and after defragmenting to catch any damage, and before and after moving all your files to that new big hard drive you just bought. If your system is working perfectly, CheckFiles may never find anything wrong, but at least you will KNOW that nothing is wrong.
CheckFiles is shareware. The registration fee for individual users is a very reasonable $15, and you can download a fully-working version from this page! (Some advanced features are disabled for unregistered users, but there are no time limits or file restrictions.)

Online Registration Information:
CheckFiles version 1.8 can be registered through the on-line services Kagi and Share-It.
Registering using mail, email, or fax using Kagi:
Included in the download package with CheckFiles version 1.8 is a program called Register. By running this program, you can select many different registration methods, including credit cards and non-US currancy. The Register program will let you register using mail, email, or fax. Registration will be through Kagi, an on-line service that provides registration for many shareware programs. (If you are sending a U.S. Check or Money Order, you can still register directly with Stochastic Systems.)
Registering directly on the Web with a credit card using Share-It:
You can register right now, through the registration service Share-It. When using Share-It, do not enter a company name and leave the check box set to register using your personal name. Registration using a company name is not available at this time. To obtain the commercial version for use at a company or other institution, please contact Stochastic Systems.
To register using Share-It, simply click on the following link:
When you register, be sure to provide your name (20 characters or less, only US ASCII characters, no business names or "handles" please) and email address. Note that Share-It requires both a first and last name. If your name is longer than 20 characters, or includes non-US ASCII characters, you can use the Share-It service, but you should also send email to Stochastic Systems informing us that you are registering through Share-It and letting us know what user name you would like.
Once your registration payment clears, you will be sent a registration key that matches your user name. By entering your user name and key into the CheckFiles program it will turn off the startup screen and list your name on the main screen. Some of the features are only available to registered users. Registration keys will be valid for future versions of CheckFiles.
If you don't have a 32-bit version of Windows but want to register the 16-bit version you are currently using, you can still use the Register program included with version 1.8, though you will have to use the older version until you upgrade your operating system. (The Register program is a 16-bit program.) You can also register through Share-It. There is no place to enter the registration key and user name in older versions, but you should still provide a user name so that you will get a valid key for when you upgrade your system.
If you are a registered user of version 1.5 or 1.5a and have not received an email about the new features in version 1.6 and above and how to access them, please send me email right away. You may have some trouble turning on these new features.
