1. Show and Tell
B. Yavits passed around Dilbert cartoon.
G. Katz showed the "Y2K news" catalog: Y2K CPR
Web site: http://www.y2knews.com
877-4Y2-KCPR
G. Katz read a letter to the editor about an event held in Medford Oregon which had an attendance of about 700 people. He also read another article.
R. Messing passed out a list of Y2K sites.
B. Dewey passed out a survival check list. He also had a copy of a paper by a coin expert. Several copies from
e-mail of a national listing of interested groups. He raised the idea of setting up an area to provide resources in case of emergency.
P. Louise-Davis passed around article from the World Future society, which discussed the importance of becoming connected. She also passed around a notice about utilities contingency planning and one about the Texas power grid.
L. Marcy had created a booklet with articles to pass around. Her mother and her sister and she are going to
set up a homestead and are looking for information about living off of the earth.

3. Emergency Preparedness Fair (H. Bitzer)
See Addendum from H. Bitzer:
- Tompkins County Emergency Preparedness Signup Sheet -
"How to's" for neighborhood feeding, watering, etc.
Emergency shelters (Rebuilding the neighborhood) (Station Management ?)
H. Bitzer passed around a list
of topics for the fair for people
to sign onto. Individuals can add t
opics that aren't already on the list.
(SPECIAL NOTE: THE EXPOSITION HAS BEEN
SCHEDULED FOR THE WOMEN'S COMMUNITY BUILDING
FOR SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 14 FROM NOON - 4:00 PM)
Negotiations are going on for the Women's Community Building for 5 hours on a Saturday afternoon
between Halloween and Thanksgiving.
G. Katz has discovered that there is a group of people in the area who are prepared to assist with short term
emergencies.
We can keep this issue in front of the public, and encourage people to volunteer, as we continue
to disseminate information. We can set up a group of presenters on related subjects.
G. Katz will do what he can do to generate media copy, but he requests that others write letters (to the editor, etc.).
He wants for this group to create a bridge with the "County Disaster Office" (Jack Miller) at the airport
and with the Red Cross, which is particularly accessible to the public.
There is also a need for community based small shelters. The largest need is for people to staff them.
Local red cross has a jump team for
hurricane disasters. (K. Feeney)
S. Caulkins asked that a list of
local shelters be prepared:
H. Bitzer is working on this.
Cooperative Extension is willing to create pamphlets for our use.
H. Bitzer wants to bring the schools into this now.
P. Louise-Davis would like to integrate her volunteer networking efforts with the fair.
S. Spearman remarked that teenagers can be a great resource for volunteering.
G. Katz asked us to ruminate on the Fair idea and come up with ideas.
B. Irvin-Bryant asked about how to address the needs of renters.
P. Glover would like to create a delegation to go to Cornell University, letting them know that many of us do not have the resources to provide for themselves, while Cornell's infrastructure has its own generating system. They are
stockpiling 30 days worth of coal, and their own water supply. They have their own web site dedicated to this issue) could provide for many in need.
G. Katz, Trish (?), R. Messing, H. Bitzer, and B. Irvin-Bryant each volunteered to help P. Glover with this.
H. Bitzer addressed the idea of neighborhood preparation. The "How-to's for neighborhoods".
4. Committee Reports:
- A. Health Fair
- S. Caulkins reported that "the garden has not been tilled". There are
still a lot of people who are not aware of the Y2K issues. Many who are aware are doing things on their own, sometimes secretly. There is also a feeling on the part of many that there is nothing great to be concerned about.
- B. Dewy suggested a Y2K table at every event in which we can participate.
- Sarah suggested having brochures at the library.
- G. Katz suggested working with the Chamber of Commerce he follow up on this.
- P. Louise-Davis asked if the Ithaca Festival Theme has been selected. P. Louise Davis and P. Glover will contact the Festival Coordinator.
- Pegasus has bulletin board ads, L. Marcy will prepare a video ad for this.
- K. Feeney suggested producing radio PSAs.
These would provide a "drumbeat in background".
- B. Spiritual Committee.
- G. Katz met with Pastor Doug Green. Pastor Green was impressed with the issue as G. Katz presented it to him. Pastor Green provided the opportunity for a one hour presentation at Pastoral Conference on Oct. 14.
- G. Katz also spoke with Pastor Ray Crognale who is very interested in dealing with the issue, though no plan has been developed yet. Ken Negvesky of the Covenant Love Community is encouraging people to prepare.
- The following people expresses an interested in developing and presenting preparations:
- S. Caulkins,
- T. Ricklefs,
- B. Dewey,
- H. Bitzer,
- G. Katz.
- S. Caulkins also feels that we should make a Y2K book and a Y2K presentation.
- C. FEMA
- The entire FEMA course presentation is being downloaded. We would like to have a FEMA table at the fair, encouraging people to take the FEMA course (H. Bitzer). M. Labbe said that there are 7 courses. Once you
take the course and pass the exam, you can help more easily. As a FEMA volunteer you could possibly get shipped out of the area. Red Cross said the they would teach the same thing and keep us local (H. Bitzer).
- B. Dewey is concerned about martial law, eg: the closing of city borders.
- H. Bitzer felt that if the community can take care of itself, the military will not have time to deal with us.
- The Anti-Cybernetic Terrorism Bill spells out what the govt. (FEMA) can do, though things will probably be so chaotic that they won't know what to do about it.
- 5. School Assembly program:
- S. Caulkins will talk to teachers at the Alternate School this week. He will report on this at the
next meeting. He also asked that anyone knows of someone in the schools who can help to develop an in-school
project should contact he or H. Bitzer.
- 6. Web Page
- M. Labbe: Needs ideas for the Web page. He will scan articles at Kinko's. Call him at 273-4887 or e-mail
to deaham@lightlink.com with ideas.
- 7. Networking
- H. Bitzer said that there is a local group in Moravia that has been meeting every Monday night for a year and a half. The contact person for this group is Marylin Petrecola 277-7940. B. Dewey will attend one of their meetings.
- S. Presthus believes that the Mormon church advises their members to provide one year's provisions.
S. Presthus will contact someone at the Church to see if they'd present at our next meeting. S. Spearman asked
if the Menonites might know something that can help us. G. Katz will try to track them down.
- Another contact is in Boulder Colorado:
The Boulder County Y2K Community Preparedness Group.
e-mail: Jasteiner@aol.com
- M. Labbe asked about contacting fraternal organizations and civic groups. He felt that we need
to get access to the leaders of community groups.
- P. Louise-Davis would like to network more with cooperative extension before the next mtg. After the Fair,
Cooperative Extension and other human service groups could keep the concept moving. P. Louis Davis
will look into grant possibilities.
- The West Danby Fire Dept. has access to a very low priced resource of emergency products.
- H. Bitzer and G. Katz brought up the concept of the mini-shelter as being essential.
- G. Katz recommended that all be aware of the following resources:
- - Jade equipment catalogue
- - C. Crane (call H. Bitzer)
- - Seed Savers
- - ETM Solar Works
