Dear Tompkins County Neighbor
In the wake of last winter's crippling ice storms in the North Country, alone
with the serious flooding that has plagued our area in recent years, and the
devastating winds that have been affecting Central New York State, such as the
Labor Day tornado that struck Syracuse, a diverse group of citizens have banded
together to focus on what is required to truly be prepared for emrgencies.
Our group is concerned about the increasing danger sposed by serious disruptions
to our technological infrastructure. For instance, in the past year alone,
hundreds of thousands of upstate resisents have experienced what it's like to
live withour electricity for weeks at a time.
We have been working in cooperation with the Tompkins County Red Cross, the Coopertive Extension and other concerned agencies to mount the first Tomkins County Emergency Preparedness Expo, designed to increase public awareness about how to prepare for a disaster before it strikes, whether they be natural or man-made. The event is schedule for Saturday, November 14, 1998 from 12-4 PM at the Women's Community Building, corner of Cayuga and Seneca Streets in downtown Ithaca. Local fire departments, disaster officials, alternative energy vendors, human service agencies, heath providers, appropriate product suppliers, and other informed presenters will be on hand to help empower the general public to take more responsibility for their own disaster preparedness. Our goal is to develop an overarching disaster plan for each neighborhood and each and each individual family in the greater Tompkins County community. This goal is attainable with your help.
We know your days are probably busy and your schefule is full, but we believe it's important for you to get involved. Here are some ideas:
