What can you do to help?

  1. Write Letters. Contact members of the Common Council and ask them to attend the meeting and consider the needs of dog owners when they vote on the extension of off leash use at the Festival Lands. Contact as many Common Council members as you can (and certainly your own Alderperson, if you live in the City of Ithaca).

If you live in Ithaca and don't know which ward you are in, you can see the ward boundaries at Ithaca Wards Map .
Once you know your ward, you can get contact info for your Common Council reps at Common Council Members' Info
(Note that Jennifer Dotson has replaced Shane Seger as one of the First Ward Common Council members - if her email address is like the others, it should be jdotson@cityofithaca.org and snail mail will be 108 E Green St, Ithaca, NY 14850)
Please review our suggested guidelines for letters.

  2. Write Letters to the editor of the Ithaca Journal or the Ithaca Times voicing your support! Letters to the Ithaca Journal can be mailed to 123 W. State Street, Ithaca, NY 14850 or you can submit them online at Ithaca Journal Online .
Letters to the Ithaca Times can be submitted online to Ithaca Times Online.
Please review our suggested guidelines for letters.

  3. Talk to other Dog Park Users Not everyone who uses the Off Leash Area is a member of TCDOG and so not everyone gets the information from the yahoo listserve. You can also download a pdf of handouts to distribute.

  4. Donate to the Compost Project. Modern Alchemy at work: Turning dog doo into Gold the Green way. Nobody but nobody wants to deal with the inevitable outcome of an omnivore's diet. Heck, we don't even want to talk about it. The s*h*i*t word is one of those specifically banned for broadcast media.
After an incredibly convoluted struggle, we have a chance to see if we can't turn this necessary nuisance into a valuable resource. TCDOG is funding this pilot project and we need to pay for it now. [ Donations ]

  5. Join TCDOG. We need as many members as possible in order to influence local and state politicians. [ Join TCDOG ]

  6. Be responsible when walking your dog(s) whether on or off leash. Pick up and dispose of your dog's waste (and any other you see). Keep your dog(s) under your control. Be aware of what your dog(s) is doing and any potentially confrontational or dangerous situations that may be developing. Be sensitive to the desires and needs of other users of the shared space.

  7. Table with us. We are trying to maintain a presence at local events where we can talk to fellow citizens and obtain signatures for petitions.
Ambassadors at the Park We're poised to begin tabling at the marina for the TCDOG Ambassador program on Monday, August 6, but we still have some volunteer slots available. Please let me know if you can help out with any of the following dates/times...

Tues., Aug. 7, 5-7 PM-One more person needed
Sat., Aug. 11, 3-5 PM-One more person needed
    Sun., Aug. 12, 1-3 PM-Two people needed

This is a great opportunity to make a real contribution to the legalization effort and we'd love to have everyone get involved. We'll be doing another week in September, but could really use a bit more help this coming week. Please consider helping out. Help@tcdog.org.

  8. Volunteer to serve on a Committee We need people to help us with standing committees such as Membership, Bylaws, Education, and Legalization. We are also looking for someone with website design experience to help us maintain this site and to give it a fresh look. Volunteer@tcdog.org

  9. Patronize dog-friendly businesses -- and tell them why!
