Well, after reading Randal's version of the story, I can tell that
cracking the password file of a machine which is not under your direct
responsibility and not sending the results of the job to those who
were directly responsible for the security of that system _immediately_
looks pretty much like computer crime.
If Randal had no criminal intentions, he behaved considerably sillier
than most of us do all the time, to the point where it's impossible to
tell whether he acted in good faith or as a criminal. If you arrive
home and find me sitting in your living room, browsing through some of
the papers in your safe, would you accept the "obvious" explanation that
I just wanted to show that the security of your home and safe has serious
flaws?
