Your faith in the law is touching. I suppose you think people should be
shot for jaywalking if that's how the law can be interpreted.
Randal was convicted under a poorly written law, for doing what he
thought was his job, in a town where he could scarcely have received a
fair trial. The case was pressed and prosecuted by people who were
more interested in protecting and advancing their careers than in doing
what is right. It was decided by a jury that fell asleep after the
first day. It's ironically appropriate that Randal was tried in the
County Court House, and not across the way in the Hall of Justice.
Randal did some silly things, but no sillier than most of us do all
the time. Life sometimes punishes us for our silliness, but when
the punishment is this far out of line, we call it a tragedy.
