Sheldrake's
agricultural legacy has continued with the planting vinifera grapes
beginning in 1997. The vineyards are situated on a slope between
two gorges that feed into Cayuga Lake and the site is blessed
with well-drained gravelly glacier soils.
Our
goal is to grow quality premium varietals including Cabernet
Franc, Riesling, Gewurtztraminer,
Pinot
Gris, Pinot Noir, Gamay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
The first estate vintage, from fruit picked on our site in 2000,
was released in 2001. Subsequent vintages have produced superior
fruit quality which is becoming more and
more evident as the wines are being finished and released.
Through sustainable practices and sensitivity to the environment,
it is our desire to preserve Sheldrake Point's agricultural heritage
while producing fine wines that display the flavors and character
of our unique terroir.
