Scores: how many people got what score? (2005)

Did I do badly? Did I do well? How can I tell?

Ice Dragon is judged on a total of 60 points. There are SIX 10-point areas that an entry is judged on: Documentation, Workmanship, Aesthetics, Complexity, Authenticity, and Creativity. Unlike a school test, there are no D's or F's. Low average scores (1.0 to 20.0) often are caused in large part by incomplete documentation, rather than unlovely or badly made entries. Causes can be:

• Entrants who have little time to complete it (having left too little time before the competition to do so). Judges have found that contact with contestants after Ice D reveals they did really know more about their entry than the documentation showed they did.

• Novices with no experience of the type of documentation expected at Ice Dragon.

• Pent contestant items entered for the 'Fifth' letter category. Quite often this is a 'desperation' or a throw-away category, since the entrant is strong in four categories, and grabs a fifth to qualify, even though their skills levels are lower in that category.

• Children's entries may also fall in this lower range.

You can see from the table below that most entrants get scores in the 40's. Very few reach the rarified air of the 50's.
