In an a hard won fight over Undead, Tree Ents, and Spiderbeasts, the Orcish Hordes were victorious in our most recent Garrison tournament, with a 3-0 record. We were playing a slightly modified version of the Gen Con World Cup scenario (the standard rules for the scenario, but with 7 turns rather than 6, and Dopplgangers were ruled to be K'ryth Champions for the purposes of this tournament). Our intrepid band of Diskwarriors consisted of:
-Ben, playing a magic free brutal Knight army supporting King Fallidir, the Musketeers, and a Jester. Ewww. Jester.
-Jason, playing a scutt heavy Undead army, with lots of archers.
-Jesse, playing a K'ryth Spawn army supported by a Spiderbeast, Firbolg, and Aggra the Hag.
-Josh, playing a very archer heavy Elf army, with multiple Tree Ents, Firbolg, and a Battlewagon.
-Ray, playing an Acolyte spell heavy army, that I didn't get a real good look at.
-Peter (me), playing a scutt heavy Orc army, backed by the new, potent Legions units.
The final game was between Peter's Orcs and Josh's Elfs, and after an inauspicious beginning, where Peter foolishly Fireballed Josh's Battlewagon twice (not realizing that wouldn't kill it...) and then followed that brilliance up by running an Urkan Horde up to pin the very same Battlewagon at the end of the turn (not realizing that the Battlewagon was just going to kill him for naught...), the Orcs rallied from their initial stupidity, and secured a victory.
The Winning Orc Army (150 points):
All three games opened up with Moog casting 2 Fireballs on the first turn (to make sure I used them before it was too late), but never really got anything all that juicy--in the first game, I got 2 Undead archers, in the second I killed the K'Ryth Spawn Master (who was quickly ressurected by Aggra), and in the third, I managed to not kill a Battlewagon with them. The Beastrider was worth his weight in gold in the tournament, as he ran through Monkeys, Wasps, Spawn, and Archers like butter. Twister was used a few times to open up holes in my opponent's armies at opportune times.
The new Legions Orc units are a freaking nightmare of utility. The Urkan Hordes are incredibly useful, especially backed by the Urotok Warriors--making them move twice a turn is *incredible*. Zallah Bakhal is possibly the best Orc unit in the game currently--7 points of ambushing Firstblow, with 12 total toughness? What is not to love?
An excellent tournament, and a great time was had by all.
