Welcome to Van Etten

"A special place", These words describe the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's reference to a Nature Trail and Wildlife area in Van Etten. However, the words could also apply to all of Van Etten. Situated in a valley surrounded by wooded hills, Van Etten is one of the best areas for hunting and fishing in the state.

LOCATION

Van Etten is centrally located in the southern tier of New York. Routes 34, and 224 intersect through Van Etten. Route 96 is 3 miles east and route 17 is 14 miles to the south. There are approximatly 600 people living in the village and 1,500 in the township.Van Etten is a predominantly rural residential community serving as homes for a commuting workforce.click here for map

SCHOOLS

Van Etten is included in the Spencer- Van Etten School District. The school district spans 144 square miles. A student population of 1160 is distributed in 3 buildings: Van Etten has 340 students in k-3, Spencer has 245 students in 4-6 and the high school has 575 students in 7-12.The school consistantly scores very high in all academic areas as compared to other schools of its size in the state. Van Etten is within a 30 min. drive to Ithaca College, Cornell University and Elmira College

Van Etten was first settled in 1795 by predominantly Dutch descendents. The town was named after James B. Van Etten. The village was incorporated in 1876. Historical points of interest: First Grist mill 1803, railroads arrived in 1871, Baptist church built in 1852, Methodist church built in 1882. Start of the Finnish settlement before WW#1, Volunteer fire dept. started in 1911.
