This page introduces Gopher, FTP, Telnet, and TN3270. These are
somewhat older, but still very powerful, Internet technologies.
NOTE:Not all Web browsers support all features. If you have
some prior experience, these sites should be self-explanatory.

- Gopher at the Univerisity of Minnesota:
gopher2.tc.umn.edu
Gopher is a simple menu-based system which allows you to navigate
information directories and files.
- FTP to Project Gutenberg
uiarchive.cso.uiuc.edu
A public FTP (file transfer server) site chosen at random. Project
Gutenberg's goal is "getting on-line books to anyone who wants them".
NOTE: For any serious file transfer work you should run FTP
directly rather than under the Web browser as we are here.
- Telnet to NIC (Network Information Center)
ds.internic.net
Telnet emulates a VT-100 terminal to allow you to access a remote host.
There are several valid public logins, including guest, archie,
and gopher.
Not recommended for beginners.
- TN3270 to Rice University Fondren Library
library.rice.edu
TN3270 emulates an IBM 3270 terminal, allowing you to access IBM
mainframes, which do not work with ordinary Telnet. This sample
host maintains public libraries. When you receive the sign-on screen,
press the ENTER key.
Not recommended for beginners.
