  Community Education

The education program of The Mental Health Association in Tompkins County educates consumers, family members and the public concerning all aspects of mental health and mental illness. The community education program arranges and/or provides workshops, forums, presentations, symposia, and opportunities for dialogue in order to accomplish this end. We also prepare and present information concerning specific topics and areas of interest as requested by individuals, groups and organizations.

Additionally, the Community Educator supervises the production of a desktop magazine, States of Mind, three times yearly, to provide information and education concerning current issues and trends in mental health. States of Mind also serves a second and equally-important function, allowing a forum for public self expression to those who have been historically disempowered. (The power and value of consumers' perspectives have traditionally been marginalized and under-valued.) States of Mind is also unique in that it provides a vehicle for articulation of the perspectives of all parties involved in the experience of mental illness and the achievement of mental health: individuals, family members, and professional providers of service.

The Community Education program is responsible for researching and preparing most of the agency's brochures and pamphlets that are distributed free of charge to the community, such as: "Guide to Mental Health Resources for Older Adults," "Recovery" (a brief list and explanantion of services in Tompkins County valuable to the individual seeking to return to the community after hospitalization or to recover from some of the debilitating aspects of mental illness), and "Mental Health is Crazy: A Mental health Guide for Teens." To request copies, contact the Community Education Program at 607-273-9250 or email info@mhaedu.org with "Community Ed" in the subject line.

Some of our brochures are available online in PDF form. View/download selected brochures at http://www.mhaedu.org/brochures.html.
