Our 141 Air Agency CertificateHere is our new 141 Air Agency Certificate from the FAA. Tom Williams and Pete Munoz dropped this off and offered their congratulations. As far as I can tell, East Hill has held a 141 certificate continuously since sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. This year we have added the flight instructor basic and instrument as well as multi-engine class rating (add-on to commercial).

Besides the obvious prestige of certification at this level, the FAA 141 "stamp of approval" is the basis of our state education certification for training college level aviation with TC3. Additionally, the 141 policies and procedures, "by the book" discipline creates a pilot more ready to enter the pilot workforce as a professional. Our CFIs moving on into industry typically go directly into jets for the airline or corporate rather than suffering through years of turboprops.

In aviation, the shortcut quick course route of "just getting the paper" (and not the best training) is especially harmful if you ever want to work in aviation as a career. On a personal level, superficial flight training is just plain dangerous. Thank-you all for maintaining our professional status and taking the time and effort to "do it right!

New Pilot at East HillHere is a happy new pilot. Thank goodness the weather finally gave us a break! Congratulations to Khairul Anwar on his Private Pilot Certificate!

Khai was not quite able to finish up his certificate in the early autumn when the weather changed and he had to be at school in London. So he returned last week on holiday break to complete the job. He has been a fixture at the club since then with his books preparing for the oral and pouncing on every available flight slot. Kudos to CFI Dave Bliek for finishing up the recommendation process despite lousy weather.

Khai investigated the costs for flight training in England and quickly realized it would be far cheaper to fly back here commercially and stay for two weeks. In England, the cost of the plane is almost three times club rates and you pay for every landing (and extra for every bounce?) Hard to believe, but we should be grateful for how inexpensive flying is here in the US. Khairul hopes to return in the spring and transition to the Skyhawk.

Mooney Night Landing

Night flying is often very beautiful. Here is a photo from the right seat while landing the Mooney as it was approaching dark. Kevin Kramer was flying (and apparently doing a pretty good job so pictures were possible). Excellent glide path and line-up!

The Mooney is currently at Taughannock getting an oil change, some brake work and finally a new "sonalert" for the gear warning system. This alert sounds when the gear is up and you reduce power below 15" manifold pressure (usually when landing...gear down is a good thing). This alert system has been intermittent and the only correct path was replacement.

Windy Final to Runway 14 KITH

Here is a unique shot that resulted from a very windy day (Dec. 15th). This is N66230 stabilized on the GPS approach to Runway 14 at Ithaca. Notice that the nose of the airplane is pointed about on the hospital (about 180° heading) to maintain the centerline of the approach (133° course) with 63 knots of crosswind. (Myer's Point is just above the glaresheild on the left) This is a good example of what you have to do to succeed in the wind...whatever is necessary! We were visual the whole way down on this approach but if you were in the clouds and broke out with this extreme correction, you would have to remember to adjust for the wind when looking for the runway. Incidentally, the icon on the GPS was perfectly aligned with the pink course line here since the GPS shows track not heading.

Justin Maas presents show on Air Wisconsin

Justin Maas presented a wonderful show on the process of becoming and airline pilot; from initial interview and screening through the daily challenges of "flying the line." An amazing inside view of the sometimes grueling flight schedules and incidents that a pilot has to deal with on a daily basis. As Tim Fallon commented, "that is starting to look like real work!" Justin demonstrated his CFI skills by asking the assembled pilots some pointed questions related to instrument flight and the physics of high-speed cruise. Thanks to Justin for such a great show. Hopefully we can present this again early next year in the as part of a FAA Wings seminar.

"Living the Dream!" Friday, December 12th at 7 p.m. Would You Like to be an Airline Pilot?

Justin Maas

Welcome Justin back to East Hill!

Many East Hill pilots have gone on to professional piloting careers (see the alumni page). Come hear about the life of an airline pilot. Justin Maas is an Ithaca native - as well as a former EHFC CFI . He currently flies the 50-seat Canadair Regional Jet for Air Wisconsin Airlines (US Airways Express). He will be sharing his experience "flying the line" and will touch on subjects ranging from getting type rated in a jet to typical daily routines, in addition to telling some "so there I was" stories. Come learn about the pros and cons of turning a hobby into a profession!

"Return of Buttercup" (PA-15 Vagabond N4406H)...Today, (12/4) 7 p.m. at the club!
A Labor of Love, By Jack and Jim Henion.    Talk and refreshments.

Buttercup: PA-15 Nagabond N4406H

"This 30 min presentation will overview last summer's story of N4406H, a classic Piper PA-15 "Vagabond", which had been relatively dormant for almost two years when my brother and I agreed to purchase it. An annual inspection lead to a saga of 'discrepancies' that consumed six-months of repairs, an engine OH, repaired engine mount, etc. which climaxed in early October 08 with a 'tail dragger check out' from Ron Buxenbaum without dual controls from a grass airstrip."

Many useful lessons for aircraft ownership were learned during this 'return to service' saga which began in the hangar of Ray van de Mark and was completed in my hangar at home. Refreshments will be served.

Canadian Adventure: Brian and Eric Fly to Toronto!

3 May 2008

Eric and Brian

Read this article in the May EHFC newsletter: "For the four years that I have spent learning and flying at East Hill, Toronto has beckoned as the ultimate day trip for any adventurous East Hill pilot. International airspace, a shoreline approach to an island airport which literally lies in the shadow of Toronto’s CN Tower... this cross-country promises just the right blend of challenge and reward." Maintenance Heros!

31 October 2007

Jerry Friedman

We are grateful every day for the maintenance guys who keep us running! We rely heavily on the essential services of people like Jerry Friedman (L) at Taughannock who usually installs and fixes our radios but also swings a wrench when called. He keeps us flying. Don McAnn and Allen Staff (R) at Finger Lakes Flying Service have done several annuals for us. They are very thorough, quick and professional. Thanks guys!
