CLASSICAL FENCING(375):FEE: $ 70.00
Unlike " olympic " fencing, which is purely a modern competitive sport, CLASSICAL FENCING is a martial art that uses the practice of the sword to cultivate self-mastery. Simulating as closely as possible an actual encounter with real swords, it is the heir to a 500 year tradition of excellence and honour. The class will meet:

HELEN NEWMAN HALL DANCE STUDIO
Monday & Wednesday 11:15am-12:00pm (Begins February 6th, Spring 2006)

RENAISSANCE FENCING(378): FEE:$70.00
Prerequisite: Fencing I or the permission of the instructor.
The rapier and its consort, the dagger, were the gentleman's constant companions from Shakespeare to Cyrano, from Francis Drake to d'Artagnan. This introductory class, intended for actors, martial artists and incurable romantics, focuses on the fundamental techniques of 16th-17th century fencing with an emphasis on safety, balance, line, focus and distance. Students will practice a variety of etudes (pre-arranged movement sequences) both alone and with a partner.

TEAGLE HALL GYM
Friday 1:30-3:00 p.m. (Begins February 3rd, Spring 2006)

Weather Cancellation Information

For Cornell classes, we will hold classes as long as the University is open, provided we can get there safely. If we must cancel a class, every effort will be made to contact someone in the building and have them put a sign on the door.

For all other classes:

  1. If the Ithaca City School District closes because of weather, we will not hold classes that day.
  2. If the schools are open, but the weather is bad or is expected to be bad, then the following guidelines apply:
    • If the Tompkins County Sheriff's Office closes the roads, classes are cancelled.
    • If the National Weather Service issues an Advisory with a statement that there should be no unnecessary travel, classes are cancelled. Such statements are broadcast on several radio stations, and are also available on the internet. I use www.wunderground.com.
    • You can always call to ask. A decision will be made by two hours before a class starts. That means 2pm for a 4pm class. You can either reach Linda at 273-7359, or, if I won't be there, I'll change the outgoing message on my answering machine.
  3. If it is possible to do so, a notice will be added to our main web page at www.classicalfencing.com stating that class has been cancelled. However, if I am not able to get home, this may not be possible.
  4. Last, but not least, if your roads are bad, stay home. Use your best judgment. One of our safety rules in class is "If you can't do it safely, don't do it at all" and that is at least as important outside of class.
