Royal Glassware.

n 1698, the widow Bourne opened a shop at No. 3 St. James's Street in London, under a hanging sign featuring an old coffee mill, from which she began selling wine and spirits. 300 years later, not much has changed at No.3., where the widow's business continues, under the name Berry Bros. & Rudd, to supply fine wines, liquors, and elegant glassware for drinking. The shop's interior features an uneven wooden floor, three original wheelback Windsor chairs, as well as an enormous set of scales slung from the ceiling which are still used for customers who which to record their body weight while selecting their goods.
Berry Bros. was in fact a hot spot in the 18th century for those in society who wished to have their weight read and recorded in the leather bound volumes which still grace the shops premises, reading like a who's who of historical figures. In the 19th century the scales were in danger of confiscation since their steel beams could not accommodate a required governmental seal. But the Duke of Sussex (King George III's son) stepped in, vouching for both the accuracy of the scales and for the vital role they played to London's citizens. Customers who have come to avail themselves of Berry Bros. drinking expertise, as well as their weighing scales, have included Sir Lawrence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Even the French Emperor Napoleon III was frequently found plying through paperwork in the shops wine cellar, along with his George Berry, the shop owner who lent his name to the business in 1810. What is good enough for the French Emperor is certainly good enough for a British Prime Minister, with Anthony Eden and Winston Churchill both enjoying the firm's products. Churchill himself often spoke fondly of five bottles of vintage cognac given to him from Berry Bros., which he referred to as his "elephants". The Prime Ministers were not alone in admiring the shop's unique qualities. Members of the British Royal were patrons at No. 3 long before they extended the Royal Warrant to the business in 1903.
Berry Bros. & Rudd glassware
A selection of fine glassware is available from the hallowed premises of Berry Bros. & Rudd. Each piece has been hand selected by Berry Bros. & Rudd as the ideal size and shape for enjoying the wine and spirits they have purveyed for over 300 years. The glassware, like the shop itself, is devoid of pretenses and superfluous show. Rather, they reflect the Berry Bros. belief that elegance flows from grace and simplicity, and that fine craftsmanship is the purist form of luxury and extravagance.
