Since 1991, Historic Ithaca's architectural salvage resale operation has been selling donated materials and decorative architectural elements including doors, windows, hardware, woodwork, plumbing and electrical fixtures, to the community. In 2001, the program was expanded through a partnership with the Tompkins County Solid Waste Management Division. This partnership rescues irreplaceable architectural elements and reusable building materials, giving them new useful lives. It reduces the amount of material that is sent to area landfills. Significant Elements has expanded, and is now located in a 3 story warehouse located in downtown Ithaca on the corner of Center Street and S. Plain Street. |
Jean Taylor has been volunteering weekly for the program since 2001. Here she is at the check out counter, which was constructed solely of salvaged materials by volunteer Matthew Sharratt.
