SUBJECT:
The Board of Education recognizes that international school trips enhance and support the school program. As the global village becomes a reality in the 21st century, forging international connections becomes a vital part of a complete educational program. International experiences foster international understanding as students partake in unique cultural experiences.
All international school trips must be approved six months in advance by the Board of Education.
The Board of Education will support international school trips, provided they are an integral part of the instructional program, and are well-planned prior to the trip with an itinerary, carefully supervised, and provide trip insurance and financial plan. All school trips, whether international or local, must supplement or reinforce classroom instruction. No academic credit or testing may be linked to such optional trips. International school trips undertaken by world language teachers are understood to offer students the opportunity to study and practice skills in the respective world languages, as well as to observe and discuss international customs first-hand. School trips undertaken by classroom teachers in other disciplines should incorporate explicit instructional objectives related to the curriculum.
The Board reserves the right to withdraw approval at any time. Reasons for withdrawal of approval include, but are not limited to, unsafe conditions as determined by the Board of Education or administration, safety alerts issued by state or federal agencies including the U.S. Department of State, either here or along the route of travel, weather-related concerns, airport shutdowns, and cancellation of flights. In such cases, the District is not responsible for reimbursing families for any expenses related to the trip that may have been incurred prior to the cancellation.
