SUBJECT:     PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT IN PROGRAMS AND PROJECTS FUNDED BY TITLE I

 

Parental Involvement

 

         The Board of Education believes that positive parental involvement is essential to student achievement and encourages participation of parents in all aspects of their child's education. In order to facilitate parent participation, the District will:

 

a)      Provide parents with information about the following topics:  the state's academic content and curriculum, student achievement standards, state and local academic assessments, Title I requirements and procedures to monitor their child's educational progress;

 

b)      Provide parents with notification of academic and behavioral difficulties encountered by their child and suggestions for communicating effectively with staff;

 

c)      Provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve academic achievement;

 

d)      Provide annual notice to parents of students attending Title I schools within the district that they may request information regarding the professional qualifications of their child's teacher(s) and paraprofessional staff;

 

e)      Provide parents with information on their child's level of achievement in each of the state assessments and provide opportunity promoting ongoing communication between home and school;

 

f)       Educate all Title 1 staff about the value of parent contributions and how to communicate with parents as equal partners in the educational process;

 

g)      Involve parents in the development of the Title I application process and conduct an annual evaluation of the content and effectiveness of parent involvement in improving the academic quality of Title I schools;

 

h)      Coordinate parent involvement strategies under other funded programs, including Even Start, Universal Prekindergarten, Head Start, and Committees on Special Education;

 

i)       Conduct other activities in Title I schools through the parent resource center which support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children;

 

j)       Convene an annual meeting to review the Title I program, student selection procedures, and parent involvement policy;

 

k)      Provide parents and community with an annual accountability status of student achievement in Title I schools.

In addition to the above, the District shall, jointly and in agreement with parents of students receiving Title I services, establish expectations for parent involvement in Title I programs in accordance with Section 1118(a) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Similarly, each Title I school within the District shall establish building level school/parent involvement policies in accordance with Section 1118(b). Such school/parent policies shall include, where applicable, school-parent compacts outlining how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student achievement and the means by which the school and parents will build and develop a partnership to help students achieve the state's high standards.
