Library Media Specialist – Elementary School
The
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate should hold (or be working toward) certification
as a School Media
Specialist.
The LMS should possess:
· A vision for developing an exemplary library media program
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills
· Knowledge of Literacy programs and approaches
· Knowledge and experience integrating instructional technology

YEAR:
SPECIFIC ROLES AND Supports/Facilitates Student Learning
RESPONSIBILITIES ● Identify,
locate, procure and manage a wide variety of print, non-print and
electronic information
· Assist students in locating materials appropriate to their reading and interest levels.
· Teach, supplement and reinforce media skills as needed, including research skills, choosing appropriate resources, and teaching computer applications.
· Reinforce strategy-based reading instruction to help students make meaning from text; support students’ interaction with a variety of genre as reflected in NYS Standards
· Serve as a Technology Teacher Leader
· Promote the development of research skills for students
· Teach responsible behavior in the use of technology
· Teach responsible behavior in the care and return of library materials
· Encourage students to read for personal enrichment and enjoyment
Facilitates Development of Curricula and Supports the Instructional
Program
· Support curriculum through collection development
· Participate in curricular planning
· Actively collaborate and plan with teachers to integrate library services and multimedia materials with instruction
· Provide in-service as needed in the use of software and media equipment for faculty and students
· Encourage teachers to use the library/media center and to bring classes for special projects
· Inform teachers of new acquisitions applicable to their instructional needs or interests

Library Functions
RESPONSIBILITIES ● Develop and maintain a warm, pleasant, student-centered learning
(cont’d) environment that accommodates a variety of teaching and learning styles
· Plan displays and exhibits
· Select materials that support curriculum and prepare and manage orders for processing in a timely fashion
· Coordinate activities of library aide
· Monitor return of materials by providing weekly or bi-weekly notices of overdue books
· Communicate with parents via newsletter or webpage to promote the library and announce upcoming events
· Maintain the building collection of materials and equipment in good condition through inventory, weeding, repairing and utilizing recognized techniques for collection development
· Maintain automated library and cataloging systems
· Conduct a yearly inventory of all materials
· Prepare all necessary records, files and statistics; maintain and incorporate pertinent data into an annual report
· Maintain a file of materials to be ordered which included suggestions by students, teachers and administrators
· Participate in School Library System functions
