The History of Glenhaven FarmIn the spring of 1979, with the help of friends and of neighbors, we planted our first acre of blueberries on our 50-acre farm in the town of Hector in central New York. We added more plants each year for the following three seasons, ending up with about eleven acres in total. The first substantial crop of berries was transported to the Ithaca Farmers Market, where we sold them for $2.00 a pint. Soon the crop was sizeable enough to open for you-pick customers. By the late eighties, our season had begun to extend for several weeks, and customers began to arrive from as far away as Pennsylvania to pick our blueberries. Since then, we have seen many families of children grow up from year to year. It was some time before we arrived at a name for the farm. During one brain-storming session, we recalled an old sign we had found on the property when we moved in. The sign advertised rooms and baths at the Glenhaven, the name of a tourist home run by the farm's former owners on route 414 near Seneca Lake. They had brought the sign with them when they moved to the farm, and so the Glenhaven lives on in a new incarnation.
