Servers

Linux excels as a robust and flexible server platform. Overhead is low, so a small machine can often suffice if demands are modest. A more powerful machine can provide a number of services at the same time without being overloaded. I can set up a server to provide:

• Web pages, using Apache, MySQL, PHP, and Perl
• Databases, using MySQL
• File sharing, using NFS and Samba
• Email, using Sendmail, Exim, Cyrusoft, and others
• Name service, using BIND
• Many other functions, using any of a wide variety of available tools

Networking and Internet

The network that a computer is connected to is as or more important than the computer itself. Linux systems are an excellent choice for key network functions such as routing, firewalling, and sharing a single Internet connection among many machines. I can help you select and install all of the components, both Linux-based and otherwise, that you need to make a fast, reliable network.

Workstations and Desktops

Over the past few years, Linux and its application software have evolved to the point where it makes an excellent desktop platform, even for those who are not technically inclined. I can help you determine if a Linux machine can meet your needs and help you select software and set up an optimal user environment.

Multi-platform Integration

Linux works well with Windows and Macintosh systems, and makes a robust and highly cost-effective server for either or both. I can help you knit a diverse group of machines into an effective, highly functional whole.

Embedded Systems

Having started out as a computer hardware designer, I am well-equipped to handle interfacing computers with the "real world". I can use Linux in this environment too, where its adaptability and solidity are a great advantage, or implement simpler systems when the overhead of an operating system is best avoided.
