Bicycling: riding year round versus seasonal only: keep your bike out of basement. Invest in gear for riding at night, in cold weather: keeps car off the road.Learn how to repair bikes: start acommunity bike repair tutoring program.Create “Street breaks”: cul-de-sacs where bikes only pass (for example, Sandra Pl in northeast – off of Winthrop Dr).
Public
transportation: Create a personal timetable for yourself.Do
business in the transportation center (around Commons). Campaign to create
new routes.Better website for journey
planning
Higher
ridership can bring down costs.
Car
sharing: Informal car sharing: figure out cost from previous year: registration,
insurance, repairs, depreciation, gas/oil, charge by the mile.Formal
private car sharing: owners pool vehicles, get specific insurance.Formal
public car sharing: set up by local government.
Freight
reduction: Foods: buy local in season, choosing a regional diet (augment
where necessary).Other products:
local building supplies, crafts, garments.Introduce
new local products using micro-manufacturing (local recycled paper?)
Green
infrastructure: permeable parking (mix of grass and brick, rainwater drains
between bricks), recycled materials
