About a dozen FLCC members are already signed up to spend the Columbus Day Weekend -- October 11-13, 2008 -- riding in the picturesque Niagara Peninsula just across the Niagara River from New York State. The drive is a bit over three hours from Ithaca to Welland, where we will stay. We have a supply of cycling maps of the Niagara region-- showing the extensive network of bike paths and routes; contact Doug if you want a copy.
We have five rooms reserved so far at the Best Western Rose City Suites in Welland, ON, (tel. 800/387-8186) which will be our home base for the tour. I'm going to set up either my room or a meeting room there as a hospitality room for meetings, refreshments, etc. We have a block of five more rooms held until next Thursday at the $107/room rate. The rooms are suites that can be comfortably shared by 2-3 people to reduce costs.
I'm going to try and arrange an advance meeting of participants next week to discuss logistics -- possibly after the Thursday night recreational ride at 8 pm.
On the weekend itself, I'm projecting that we will plan to meet at the hotel on Friday night around 8:00 pm to get oriented, have pizza and discuss possible rides for Sat, Sun and perhaps Monday. I suspect there may be two or more rides each day, depending on the interests of the group. We'll try to do a group dinner on Saturday and perhaps a side trip to Niagara-on-the-Lake on one day since it's a nice place to visit. Some people are leaving on Sunday and others are staying until Monday. I have many maps of rides in the region that I'm going to share with folks.
Let me know if you are interested in joining us. It would be great to have you there. Also, if you plan to go and want a room at the hotel, you should make a reservation before Sept. 25th and ask for a room held under the FLCC block. Let me know if you have more specific follow-up questions.
