Review of Phyllis Pancella in the title Role of Carmen
English National Opera - Jonathan Miller production (May 1,
1999)
"American mezzo Phyllis Pancella lived up to advance
billing in her British debut with ENO, in a revival of Jonathan
Miller's finely judged Carmen on May 1. Not only was the role consistently
well sung, with no obvious striving for effect and with rich tone produced
throughout the range at all dynamic levels, but her every word registered."
"... Pancella turned in a memorable Carmen. The essential qualities
were all on display -- sexual allure, fierce independence, intelligence,
unscrupulousness and fatalism -- building a complex, fascinating portrait.
