"American mezzo Phyllis Pancella lived  up to advance billing in her British debut  with ENO, in a revival of Jonathan  Miller's finely judged Carmen on May 1.  Not only was the role consistently well sung, with no obvious striving for effect and with rich tone produced throughout the range at all dynamic levels, but her every word registered."
