     JAIL FAQ

     HOW TO CONTACT US

     Call 607 277 0959 or 607 272 2872, or e-mail
openportal@lightlink.com, however not before reading this entire FAQ.

If you call us and we determine you have not read this FAQ, we will
direct you to read the FAQ and then call us back.

If you do contact us be sure to include your e-mail address and
phone number along with your MAC address and IP number as reported on
the quarantine screen if applicable.

     WHAT IS HARD JAIL?

Users who have been thrown into quarantine, or jail as we call it,
more than 3 times in one day, may be jailed permanently. They may have
to call us and prove that their machine is free of infections by
presenting us with a clean bill of health from a computer professional
working in town before we will let them out.

DOES JAILING MYSELF COUNT AS A STRIKE AGAINST ME?

No. If you jail yourself through the JAILME link, this does not
count against you. It provides you a safe space wherein you can
disinfect your machine without worrying about being infected again. You
can jail yourself as many times as you wish and stay there for as long
as you like without penalty. Notice however that jailings are
periodically purged to give everyone a fresh start, so don't expect to
be able to stay in jail forever.

The JAILME link presently does not work. Use your first jailing as
an opportunity to stay in jail to clean up your machine, even if you
decide to take it to a professional. You can always get out of jail
later.

     WHY WAS I JAILED?

Presently using paid music downloading services and most games are
OK, this may change in the future if abuse is rampant.

Users are jailed for the following reasons.

1.) Peer to peer video or music sharing, ie. Gnutella, Kazaa etc.
2.) Unnecessary bandwidth wasters like BitTorrent etc.
3.) Outgoing bandwidth exceeds incoming bandwidth for too long.
4.) Too much bandwidth used in either direction in an hour.
5.) Infected machines, worms, port scanning, viral spam etc.
6.) Offering dynamic IP's to users on our network.
7.) Stealing dynamic IP's or any IP and assigning them to
yourself as a static without our permission.
     8.) Broadcast storming
9.) Hacking or otherwise messing with our network.

The most common underlying offense is too many open tcp/ip
connections at one time or too much bandwidth being used, usually a sign
of music/video sharing, port scanning, viral spamming, or worms trying
to infect others.

HOW DO I GET OUT OF JAIL?

Hit the "GET ME OUT OF JAIL" link.

Notice that it may take a few minutes for the system to realize
that you are no longer infected. For example if you got jailed because
of an infection that had 2000 connections open at once, it may take 5
minutes for those connections to die off even if you shut your machine
down, so if you get yourself out of jail before that, the system may
just jail you again.

CAN THE JAILING SYSTEM EVER BE WRONG?

Certainly, any code or algorithm can be wrong in its conception,
design or implementation. This is why we keep a complete and permanent
record of every jailing so that if questions arise we can refer back to
a particular incident and see why that machine was jailed.

Notice though a lot of people have the attitude "I know I am not
infected, my previous ISP never said anything about my machine etc!" If
we have a record of your machine with 1840 open connections clearly port
scanning the planet, your machine is infected, no matter what anyone
else says.

SO PLEASE FIX IT NOW, NOT LATER.

If you haven't gone to www.sarc.com and checked your machine out,
then you don't know if you are infected or not. And even if you have
gone to www.sarc.com, your machine may STILL have something wrong with
it that www.sarc.com missed, such as music/video sharing or spyware.

BUT ISN'T GETTING MY HOME WORK IN ON TIME MORE IMPORTANT THAN
GETTING UNINFECTED?

No, you may not use an infected machine on our network for any
reason, except to get it disinfected, period, end of story. Its your
choice. If you want to use our network, get your machine clean clean
and turn off the music/video sharing.

WHAT DO I DO ABOUT AN INFECTED MACHINE?

First visit the ONLINE VIRUS DETECTION link at www.sarc.com, and
let it scan your computer. It will tell you if you have an infection,
and how to deal with it. Follow the instructions and deal with all of
them. Very rarely does a machine have just one infection.

Then you need to get your updates done, hit on the WINDOWS UPDATE
link and follow the instructions. Turn on AUTOMATIC UPDATING while you
are at it, set it to update during the times of day you tend to use your
machine the most to make sure the automatic updates happen. Set it to
check every day.

Then go BACK to www.sarc.com and verify that you are still uninfected,
sometimes a machine will get infected while it is waiting for the update
process to complete! If you stayed in jail this whole time, you should
be clean, that's what jail is for, to protect you, from being
reinfected while still vulnerable.

However jail can't protect you from people on your own network, which
at a hotspot or apartment complex can be pretty big, so you may get infected
even while in jail until all the vunlerabilities are cleaned up.

Remember if you try to do your updates while still infected, some
infections prevent the updates from happening.

So if you get jailed, stay in jail, get disinfected, get updated,
and then check for infection again.

Then go to www.ad-aware.com, and download ADAWARE and scan for
spybots and other malware that may be slowing your computer down and
wasting our bandwidth.

Once those four steps are done, hit on the GET OUT OF JAIL link.

If you CAN'T go to one of the mentioned sites while in jail, report
this to us immediately so we can add in the proper IP's, Microsoft and
Symantec add or change their IP numbers periodically.

WHAT DO I DO ABOUT TOO MUCH BANDWIDTH IN AN HOUR?

Take a breather from sharing music and videos, doing backups or
file swapping with your buddies over the internet, or whatever you are
doing that is using all that bandwidth.

HOW DO I AVOID OFFERING DYNAMIC IP'S

This is usually caused by plugging the LAN port on your home router
into the WAN ethernet port on your wall. The LAN port is supposed to
hand you dynamic IP's, but if you have it plugged into the ethernet that
goes to the wall it will try to hand IP's to the rest of the world
instead. This makes ISP's very angry, they will tend to hunt you down
and show up at your door with their networking buddies.

HOW DO I AVOID STEALING DYNAMIC OR OTHER IP'S AND USING THEM AS
STATICS?

Just don't do it. You have to go out of your way to do it, so if
you are doing it, you probably know you are doing it.

Stealing IP's is criminal tresspass and theft of services and makes
ISP's *VERY* angry, they will not only show up at your door with their
buddies, but also with the cops.

HOW DO I AVOID CREATING A BROADCAST STORM?

Most Windows XP machines and above allow you to turn on bridging
between the ethernet port and your radio port. If your radio access
point is plugged into the same network as the ethernet port, broadcast
addresses which go to all machines, will go in the ethernet port, out
the radio port to your radio AP and back onto the ethernet network,
around and around. Sort of like the feedback loop you get when you put
a microphone up to the loudspeaker. A broadcast storm can totally take
out a network while it is going on, so don't.

HOW DO I AVOID HACKING OR OTHERWISE MESSING WITH THE NETWORK?

If you are smart enough to hack around the network, you are smart
enough to know you are doing so, so don't even think about it.

While you are hacking around on the network anyhow, if you manage
to find a serious security flaw and let us know about it and help us
close it, we will forgive you and consider you one of us.

CAN I GET OUT OF JAIL AT ANY TIME?

Yes, however if your machine is still misbehaving, it will just get
jailed again very shortly, so clean it up before you get out of jail.
If you get hard jailed, you will have to call in.

WHAT DO I DO IF I CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT?

Find a knowledgeable friend to help you. If you are a student try
the help desk at your college.

If all else fails, call the Computer Room at 277 8336 and ask for
help. They will however charge you for their time.

Lightlink and its staff can not help anyone get their machine
disinfected beyond the links posted here.
