Question for March, 1999

Phrases and Words. Last month's question was quite controversial. This month's question is more of a challenge to participate. When we are looking for a better way to express an idea, sometimes we are looking for a single word that does the same job as the phrase, but more concisely, and perhaps more elegantly. The following phrase-word combinations give an idea of what this involves:

garbage barge......................scow
leftover food....................... ort
follow relentlessly.................dog
street child..........................waif/urchin
professional writer................wordsmith
look angrily........................scowl
leather whip........................knout
sales pitch..........................spiel
flightless bird.......................emu
centrifuge insert....................phial
comment critically..................animadvert
syncronized figure.................animatronic
earthenware pot....................ampulla
look lecherously....................ogle
