The Scottish Fold breed originated in Scotland in the early 1960's.  The distinctive feature of this breed is the "folded ears," which give these cats a facial appearance similar to an owl.  Scottish Folds do, however, come in two types -- folded and straight ear.

All Scottish Folds are born with straight ears.  At three to four weeks of age, the ears may fold forward and downward on the head. (The folded ear is the result of a spontaneous mutation of an incomplete dominate gene existing within this breed.)  The "folded ear" cats are rare and their popularity with cat lovers often exceeds their availability.

A Scottish Fold litter typically has both folded-ear and straight-ear cats.  Consequently, it is hard to describe exactly what a Scottish Fold cat may look like.  Beyond the fact that it may have folded ears ... or may not .. Scottish Folds can be longhaired or short-haired, and their colors run the spectrum from solids to calicoes to tabbies and bicolors.

Today, Scottish Folds are the sixth most popular breed in the United States.  Both folded-ear and straight-ear varieties are hardy cats with a sweet disposition and quiet manner.  They love human companionship and adapt well to almost any home situation.

The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA) granted championship status to Scottish Folds in 1978. The quality of a Scottish Fold (pet, breeder, show) can usually be determined y 11 to 12 weeks of age.
