"Frog-mouthed" Jousting Helm

German, late 15th century
built 1990

This helmet is based on the "Brocas" helm, now in the British Royal Armories. The bracket on the front of this helm would lock down over a fitting on the breastplate, while the buckle on the back would be attached to a strap from the backplate. This would render the helmet immoveable against the impact of the three-pointed lances used in the joust. The plates making up the front surfaces of this helm are much heavier than those in back.
