The "Palmette Garniture" with Reinforcing Pieces

German, circa 1525.
built 1995

Exchange pieces for this garniture include a reinforcing visor, bevor, shoulder with hautpiece, breastplate, and a waist plate with a tasset. There are also reinforcing plates on the left elbow and over the left gauntlet. For heavy field use, the wearer could employ the basic armor with the additional breastplate and shoulder; worn with all of the reinforcing parts, as shown here, the harness is suitable as a light jousting armor. The reinforcing pieces are left plain of decoration, as was frequently the case, and their borders are decorated with scalloping, but left unhemmed, because their thickness makes the hems both unnecessary and difficult to execute gracefully. The lance rest is displayed ready for use; it can also be folded up to get it out of the way.

Return to view without reinforcing pieces.
