"Black and White" Armor

German, circa, 1580
built 1992

"Black and whites" were infantry and light cavalry armors. They are characterized by bright steel bands and broad black surfaces, darkened either by oxide or paint. The black surfaces are left rough from the hammer and not polished. The helmet shown here is a burgonet; the face is covered with a buff. I also made a morion as an exchange piece for this harness. Because this is the armor of the infantry or mounted pistoliers, there is no lance rest. I provided two pairs of gauntlets for this harness, a pair of mittens, and a set of fingered gloves.
